    How to Use

    Preparation

Before sealing, ensure that all surfaces are clean, dry, stable, and free from frost. Remove any release agents, water repellents, laitance, dust, dirt, old sealants, and other contaminants that may hinder adhesion from all joints. For non-porous surfaces, clean and degrease using a suitable solvent, applied with an oil and lint-free cloth prior to sealant application. For porous substrates, mechanical cleaning methods such as a steel brush or sanding disc should be employed. Note: When handling solvents, ensure proper ventilation is provided. Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Wear solvent-resistant gloves and adhere to all safety precautions indicated on the solvent container label.

    Masking

To prevent substrate contamination and achieve a clean sealant line, mask areas adjacent to the joints with tape. It is advisable to remove the masking tape immediately after tooling.

    Priming

Most common non-porous substrates do not require a primer. However, conducting a test placement before general application is advisable.

    Back-Up Materials

It is recommended to use closed cell polyethylene backer rod as a backup material to provide back pressure and prevent three-sided adhesion, which can restrict sealant movement. In cases where the joint is too shallow for backer rod, low tack polyethylene tape should be utilised.

    Finishing

Tool the joint within 5 minutes of application to ensure proper contact between the sealant and the substrate. Tooling also contributes to a smooth and professional appearance.

    Clean-Up

Excess sealant can be removed from tools and non-porous surfaces while still uncured. If sealant is incorrectly applied to porous substrates, allow it to cure slightly before removing it through peeling, cutting, or other mechanical methods. Take care to avoid damaging plastic or coated surfaces.

    Joint Design

When creating joints with DOW CORNING C50, it is essential to maintain a minimum width of 6mm. For joints measuring between 6mm and 12mm in width, a seal depth of 6mm is necessary. For joints exceeding 12mm in width, a width-to-depth ratio of 2:1 should be applied. In cases where fillet joints are required, we advise a minimum sealant bite of 6mm on each substrate.
